Michael Mcmullen

28th Aug 2026

    Death Notices
Michael Mcmullen

Michael passed away at the Countess of Chester Hospital on Wednesday 1st January 2025, aged 82 years.

Michael will be sadly missed by his family, friends and all at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church.

Funeral service to take place on Tuesday 11th March 2025 at 1.30pm at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, Cheyney Road, Chester followed by Committal at Chester Crematorium.

Michael McMullen was a cultured man with an almost Victorian/ Edwardian approach to life. I met him as we were both members of the congregation at St Thomas’ Church in Chester.
He had a small group of family and friends who he appreciated greatly. He was very proud of his brothers David and James and their scholarly achievements in Cambridge and Oxford.
He had a wealth of stories about his time working overseas. One example being his time as a copy writer in New Zealand in the 1960s.
Later in life he had taken on a gothic style castle in Tullamore, Republic of Ireland and undertook extensive restoration work of the site which dated back to the 17th century.
Charleville Castle has been used for movie location work (Northanger Abbey, Becoming Jane etc) and is a noted Irish building.
Michael moved to Chester in the 1980/90s. He travelled frequently to Ireland to attend to business matters. He was determined in his business affairs and would pursue matters in a single minded way. He is the only man I know who has taken a country (Ireland) to an international court (ECHR).
He had a great knowledge of antiques and would take a keen interest in auctions and the general antiques’ market.
Whilst I knew him he lived a fiercely independent life. He often put me to shame in his ability to travel to Ireland or in this country despite his increasing mobility issues.
He was the last man I knew to wear a fedora as an everyday hat rather than an affectation.
I will miss him.

I wish to express my condolences to Michael’s family, following his recent passing. My father Victor Mitchell and I were business and personal friends of Michael’s, from the time that he came to Ireland to live.

Michael was a familiar figure at our auction rooms in the past. And I got the opportunity to meet him again more recently, not long before he returned to live in England. He was a unique and very knowledgeable person. We are sorry that we wont have the opportunity to meet him again. May Michael RIP

Legend is a word used too much but Kev really was one. He could fix anything, was generous and authentic.
I remember our times in EL Salvador fondly. The world will truly miss someone of Kev’s calibre.

I had pleasure working with Kevin in ABB in Moscow. I will always remember his kindness, cheerful spirit and supportive and positive attitude. Kevin will be truly missed. My sincere condolences.

Big Kev, rest in peace! You were a legend in El Salvador, bringing smiles to so many people and always so community minded. It was a pleasure to cross your path.

And so farewell my true and close friend. Deeply respected by me and all who knew you. Your passing is already sorely missed.

Ye’ll tak the low road and I’ll tak the high road
But ye’ll be in Pen-Y-Ffrith afore me.

Only just learned that Kevin has passed on and feel quite shattered by the news. A great friend whose company was always a joy. I’ll miss you mate.

He was very kind, easy going, generous and good natured, was I’m sure a great teacher, an inspiring role-model, a wonderful father, partner, grandfather, and was so knowledgeable and interesting to talk to. He happily offered use of his land to host a nature conservation project up on the Denbigh Moors 10 years ago. I wanted to contact him to update him what happened, but it sadly wasn’t to be. He is greatly missed.

Marie was an amazing lady who I have so much time for.

As a manager she was so supportive and helped me shape the early part of my career quite rapidly which i will forever be grateful for.

But not only did she help shape my career, she also helped shape me as a person as I looked up to her and aspired to be just like her on both a work and personal basis. She conducted herself in such an amazing way with her infectious personality and amazing sense of humour.

And i have to admit, she did tell me off on a number of occasions, but she seen a potential in me and made sure that she unlocked it to let me and helped me to flourish.

The stories about her life, her travels and her experiences i could sit and listen to for hours. She was truly a fascinating lady.

Marie probably never knew just how much i thought of her, but i can say to her family, my life is so much better for Marie being part of it and i am so proud to say that not only was she an amazing person and manager, i am blessed that i get to call her my friend!

I would like to send my love, thoughts and deepest condolences to the family.

Mallie will be dearly missed by his Wife Judith and his many friends.

In line with Mallie’s wishes, a private service will be taking place.

RIP Mally, Goldie and I haven’t seen you for a while. Fond memories of our chats at the coffee mornings and Goldie having treats from you.

Mallie you was the life of the ringers you will be sadly missed , loved winding dad Phil up we was so bad me and you 😂 always in our thoughts

Deepest sympathy to Judith and all those who will miss Mallies presence in their lives. He worked hard for the benefit of others doing his utmost for Frodsham and the people who call it home.
I for one appreciate his commitment and all that he did.

Firstly Judith sincere condolences. You were always by his side. He always spoke so highly of you.
I first met Mallie a good few years ago, absolutely fell in love with his humour and personality he was such a lively guy and we had some fantastic times especially in the Red Lion many a gin shared there discussing our previous loves and lives.
We were honoured to be invited to his birthday party last year and yes it was a true Mallie style party and Judith sorted so much out for him to ensure it went well and everyone enjoyed themselves.
Mallie was a brilliant flamboyant mayor, with Judith by his side. He did a lot for Frodsham but also received a lot of criticism which was unfounded but he rose above most of it.
Love you Mallie. Xx

Thinking of all that knew and loved you Mallie. Judith you are in my thoughts, sending love and healing xx

We had some great times together as Mayors and you were always determined to include as many of the chain gang as possible. Judith has always been at your side, a true friend. Rest easy my friend, condolences to Judith and all who will miss you xx
